Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory aims at ensuring the safety, security and reliability of the U.S. nuclear deterrent and works to prevent nuclear proliferation and nuclear terrorism, develop capabilities to counter terrorism and other emerging 21st-century threats, and develops technologies to enhance U.S. military effectiveness and better protect the soldier. LLNL also works to advance science to better understand climate change and its impacts and to develop technologies supportive of a carbon-free energy future. Research activities are carried on in the fields of energy and environmental security, defense, energy technologies, laser systems, micro-nano technologies, sensors, imaging, computing applications, photon science, and life sciences.
