Team ViGIR, which stands for Virginia-Germany Interdisciplinary Robotics Team, consists of researchers from TORC Robotics, Technische Universitat (TU) Darmstadt, Virginia Tech (VT), and Oregon State University (OSU). They were one of twenty-six teams from eight countries that participated in the Virtual Robotics Challenge (VRC) which challenged teams to develop software to control and supervise a simulated robot in a virtual environment. Competing teams applied their software in an attempt to complete a series of tasks involving manipulation and locomotion. The top seven teams in the VRC earned funding and a Boston Dynamics ATLAS robot from DARPA to prepare to compete in the DRC Trials in December 2013.
