The In-Situ Underwater Gamma Spectroscopy system (ISUGS) uses existing instrumentation and computer software developed by Canberraadapts it for use as a submersible unit, and modifies the efficiency calculations. Canberra developed the technology for Framatome Technologies, who provide the service. ISUGS components include
the In-Situ Objecting Counting System (a 3 keV – 2 MeV germanium detector), high-voltage power supply, single-port multi-attitude
liquid nitrogen cryostat and remote detector chamber, submersible housing with electronics and vent umbilical, 10 externally mounted
interchangeable shielded collimators, multi-channel analyzer, notebook and desktop computers, and associated software. A wall-mounted
detector support bracket with adjustable X-Y slides, dual elevation wire rope rigging attachments, and detector housing
strongback with distance measurement device were developed for this demonstration. The submersible unit with detector and the collimators weighs approximately 500 pounds. This technology can operate in relatively high radiation fields with dose rates from 0.050 to >1,000 R/hour.

Limitations
The ISUGS technology is limited to underwater applications and should not be deployed directly over fuel rods due to concerns over
accidental breakage. Another limitation is objects which cannot be moved to the ISUGS unit for scanning due to weight, size, radiation and safety concerns, or deteriorating condition. Some objects could break
when moved within the pool water.
