Evolution 180 Portable Metal Cutting Circular Saw

Category: Dismantlement > Mechanical Cutting Equipment > Circular Cutting Saw
Reference # : Model No : 180

The Evolution 180 circular saw is a portable saw originally designed for cutting metal, including stainless steel, steel, and aluminum. The Evolution 180 saw is faster, cleaner, and safer than other metal cutting equipment. The saw has a specifically designed cover to collect virtually all chips and sparks while cutting metal. Some tool features include a cutting depth and width adjustment device, a spindle lock for fast and easy blade changes, blade-guiding arrows and opening, and an overload switch to shut off automatically when overloading occurs. The Evolution 180 saw blade is designed to work up to 3,500 RPM, 120v, 60Hz. The Evolution 180 circular saw weighs approximately 13 pounds, and its dimensions are 16” L x 10-5/16” W x 9“ H. Evolution 180 Circular Saw Blade Description Two different types of blades were used during the glovebox FRP crate size reduction: Evolution Wood – It is carbide tipped blade for wood cutting. Maximum RPM is 3,500; 180 mm x 20 mm x 2.0 mm and 34 teeth. Evolution Metal – It is a tugsten carbide tipped saw blade for mild metal. Maxiimum RPM is 3,500; 180 mm x 20 mm x 2.0 mm and 36 teeth. Both blades are specially designed models for the Evolution 180 hand-held circular saw.

Benefits

(1) The Evolution 180 saw is very effective for cutting stainless steel. No sparks were observed while cutting occurred. The tool is easy to operate, and final cuts were clean. Left surface was smooth. (2) Even though the test time was short, the cutting rate obtained was considered high. (3) The saw is mobile, lightweight, and easy to operate and requires very little prior training. Technicians found this tool powerful and capable of cutting through stainless steel but not fiberglass and plywood. (4) Cutting activities were conducted under safe conditions for operators, evaluators, and the environment. LANL did not experience considerable heat transfer while cutting occurred.

Limitations

(1) The Evolution 180 saw did not cut through the fiberglass and plywood. However, it performed outstandingly with stainless steel cutting. LANL technicians rated the tool as underpowered and not ideal for wood. (2) The metal chip collector works well for metal chips but not for sawdust. Fumes and dust was observed while attempting to cut the FRP crates. (3) Operator training is required to use this tool. Blade change is more difficult than other circular saws. (4) A drawn cutting line is also recommended to facilitate straight cuts. (5) The Evolution 180 circular saw produced noise up to 105 decibels (dB), which represents a potential hazard for operators. Vibration levels were at the front handle 0.130 in/sec and at the rear handle 0.120 in/sec. Vibration level above 0.709 in/sec is considered dangerous. This level of vibration represents a Hand/Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) hazard for workers who use this tool on a regular basis (8 hrs/day). (6) Secondary waste generation is mainly sawdust for FRP crate and metal chips collected in the cover of the saw.
