Trunk-Supporting Exoskeletons, specifically backX, are ergonomic interventions designed to reduce the risk of back injuries by decreasing forces and torques on the wearer's back at the L5/S1 location. backX is a passive exoskeleton that allows the wearer to perform various maneuvers such as walking, squatting, ascending and descending stairs, slopes, and ladders, riding bicycles, and driving trucks. It achieves this by compensating for the torque due to the user's torso weight, thereby minimizing the erector spinae muscle forces at the L5/S1 location.
Benefits
- Reduces forces and torques on the wearer's back at the L5/S1 location
- Allows the wearer to perform various maneuvers, including walking, squatting, and climbing stairs
- Minimizes the risk of back injuries for workers who repeatedly go through stooping, squatting, and bending postures
- Decreases muscle activities in the back during forward bending postures
- Improves range of motion in the trunk in the sagittal plane
- Reduces discomfort during forward bending
Limitations
- Requires the use of gas springs for generating force only when the wearer bends
- May impede the wearer's motion if force is present during other maneuvers, such as climbing stairs or walking
- May not be comfortable for all users if not adjusted properly
- May not be suitable for all work settings or tasks, as some tasks may require a high degree of flexibility or mobility that could be impeded by the exoskeleton
