Dismantlement 300 Area, Hanford Site Explosive Demolition of Buildings 337, 337B and the 309 Stack at the Hanford’s 300 Area On October 9, 2010, Buildings 337, 337B, and the 309 Exhaust Stack located in the 300 Area at the Hanford Site, were safely razed by explosive demolition. The 337 facility and adjacent buildings were built in the early 1970s to support the Fast Flux Test Facility and the Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor Program at Hanford. The 309 Exhaust Stack was utilized at the Plutonium Recycle Test Reactor (PRTR) during the 1960’s to support development of the plutonium fuel cycle. The proper applicati Download
Dismantlement Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) Historical Hazard Identification Process for D&D The historical hazard identification process describes the participants and steps of the process. The results of this effort are provided to the project manager in two formats. The first is the binder(s) containing the collected information in a systematic format. The second is a hazards map, which summarizes and graphically depicts the hazard information contained in the binders. The project manager uses this information as a baseline to start the project execution plan. Download
Decontamination OSTI Lessons Learned and Best Practices Program Manual This document from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory provides the requirements and guidelines for conducting a lessons learned and best practices program to ensure ongoing improvement of safety and reliability and prevent recurrence of significant adverse events. Download
Dismantlement Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) Open Air Demolition of Asbestos Gunite by Using Track Mounted Wet Cutting Saw “LLNL’s B328 building is a metal structure with a corrugated metal exterior façade. The walls of the structure consist of a corrugated metal exterior surface, a one & one-half inches (1.5’’) of Gunite, and four inch (4’’) thick fire bricks subsurface. In addition, there are 6” x 6”x 1/2” tube steel columns and beams for structural support. In order to size reduce the structure and prevent exposure of personnel to asbestos material, a track mounted wet cutting saw with a diamond blade was use Download
Dismantlement Idaho National Lab Structural Code Guidance for Decontamination and Decommissioning Activities at DOE Facilities The intent of writing the guidance document is to provide clear and uniform guidance to D&D design engineering, to make D&D engineering efforts and field applications more cost effective, and to ensure the safety of D&D personnel. Download
Dismantlement Savannah River Site The Use of Explosives to Demolish the 185-3K Cooling Tower Best practice for the use of explosives to demolish the 185-3K Cooling Tower at the Savannah River Site. Download
Dismantlement EFCOG Best Practice Use of a Remote Tapping Tool at INL to Minimize Worker Exposure and Avoid Future Contamination Accid This best practice describes the development and then use of a remote tapping tool at INL to address the need for safely tapping piping systems in high radiation areas by increasing the distance from radiation areas and reducing the dose rate to the D&D worker. Download
Dismantlement EFCOG Best Practices Use of Earthen Benches and Other Technologies to Support Remediation and Removal of Contaminated Riv The 100-N river structures included two pump houses (181-N and 181-NE) and an outfall structure (1908-NE). The structures were built in the early 1960s to support the N Reactor operations, the world’s first dual-purpose reactor, which produced plutonium and provided steam to the Hanford Generating Plant for electricity production. The structures were constructed of steel-reinforced concrete with walls up to 4-ft thick. Download
WorkerSafety Office of River Protection Workers Refine New Equipment and Process Prior to Field Implementation Use of a specific combination of encapsulating suit and respiratory system kept workers cooler, offered better protection, and improved efficiency during high hazard entries. Creation and use of a mock-up system and deliberate worker involvement led to improvements for the equipment and their uses. Download
